Capercaillie Wine Company

With more than 100 wineries and vineyards in the Hunter Valley, each looks for a point of difference, and at Capercaillie Wine Company, the Scottish influence is something unique to the region. Coupled with the Scottish theme, it is the first winery you will see as you turn left into Lovedale Rd. The care and attention to the winery is seen immediately upon entering the cellar door which doubles as an art gallery, some of the work created by winery owner Trish Sutherland. Best Red: 2006 “The Ghillie” Shiraz

Best Red: 2006 “The Ghillie” Shiraz

Winemaker’s tasting notes: Purple crimsony youthfulness in colour. A wine still in its relative infancy, it is winding up for a big future. Having said that, it also drinks very well now. Persistent dark fruit characters ensue, think blueberries, blackberries and plums – lively acidity supports the fruit, which is distinct and quite pure in character. Silky fine tannins along with cedary, spicy oak and dark liquorice, and subtle [...]

Best value: 2009 Slainte Red

Best value: 2009 Slainte Red

Winemaker’s tasting notes: Slàinte (pronounced Slahn-je) is Scotland and Ireland’s toast to good health. Deep purple in colour with tinges of crimson, this wine oozes sweet cherries and plums with hints of Christmas spice on the palate. Made in 2009 from chambourcin from the Lovedale vineyard, the tannin structure is really soft allowing it to be enjoyed on any informal occasion or simply as an everyday easy drinking quaffer. The perfect wine to enjoy through the warmer months as it is delicious served slightly chilled. [...]
