Centennial Vineyards

Centennial Vineyards

Driving up the hill towards the building of Centennial Vineyard headquarters has a sense of awe about it. The building is bright and sits proud at the top of the hill. Even though not many people are around, there is an air of confidence – confidence which can be seen in the professional way the company does its business, and indeed in the way it produces its wines. The large building was built in 2001/2002 and contains state-of-the-art facilities, from the winery at the back [...]

Best Centennial White: 2008 Reserve Chardonnay

2008 Reserve Chardonnay Winemaker’s tasting notes: Our 2008 Reserve Chardonnay was made from beautifully ripened fruit from a very high altitude vineyard (900m) in Orange, NSW. The fruit had amazing natural balance requiring very little intervention in the winery, apart from using the very best French Oak barrels for fermentation and maturation. It has lovely stonefruit and citrus aromas with enticing spicy/nutty oak characters from barrel fermentation in French Oak. The palate has good weight with fantastic fullness of flavour and a satisfying savoury texture. [...]

Best Centennial Red: 2007 Reserve Shiraz Viognier

Best Centennial Red: 2007 Reserve Shiraz Viognier

2007 Reserve Shiraz Viognier Winemaker’s tasting notes: This wine is a blend of 95% Shiraz with 5% Viognier. Viognier is added to provide lifted perfume, and also to contribute to a syrupy, smooth palate. Ripe blackberry, blood plum, cinnamon, and hints of dried apricot & caramel oak perfume the nose. The palate is concentrated with a lovely lacing of ripe smooth tannin providing a platform to showcase the rich, silky flavours and viscosity. Balance, with nice acidity provides structural support and a very long finish [...]

Best Centennial Other: Méthode Champenoise Sparkling

Méthode Champenoise Sparkling The world’s top sparkling wines are produced by the classic ‘méthode champenoise’: wines of several grape varieties are assembled together, then fermented a second time in the bottle. This secondary fermentation produces the fine beading bubbles associated with premium sparkling wines. Centennial Vineyards uses Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from a single vineyard to create wines of individual character. At least 18 months of ageing on the yeast lees follows, while the wine slowly develops distinctive aromas of yeast and crusty bread. Riddling [...]

Best Centennial Value: 2009 Bong Bong Red

2009 Bong Bong Red Winemaker’s tasting notes: Bong Bong Red is a medium-bodied wine with bright, clear varietal aromas and flavours. The nose shows lovely red fruit characters (raspberry, cherry, red plum) and blackberry, with classic Southern Highlands spice. These flavours are intense and powerful and drive the full length of the palate, with a finish that lingers forever. This is a great example of Southern Highlands fruit delivering an elegant, medium-bodied red style, driven by intense, bright fruit flavours. The blend is predominantly Shiraz [...]

Southern Highland Wines

Southern Highland Wines

When driving along the Illawarra Highway, there is a building which clearly demands your attention. Perched on the hilltop and surrounded by vineyards sits the Southern Highland Wines complex. Like all good wineries, SHW has a well respected chef and a great restaurant. With wines which have been constantly rated world class, the handywork of the Rossi, Corradi and Colloridi families cannot be overlooked. Eddy Rossi is chief winemaker and is very matter-of-fact about his business; an organiser with drive and ambition geared towards putting [...]

Pulpit Rock Estate Wines

Pulpit Rock has formed a team which is gearing itself towards one goal – making elite-level wines in a “sustainable” environment. Their efforts are already being recognised by experts. The operation is small, producing no more than 600 cases a year from their 4 hectare vineyard planted with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. But if the experts can be believed, the quality is without question. In his latest reviews, wine writing guru James Halliday rated the Pulpit Rock 2006, 2007 and 2008 Chardonnay with 5 stars. [...]

Marist Brothers: The Hermitage

Marist Brothers: The Hermitage

Feeling guilty about drinking a little too much wine? Perhaps we have the answer – a little divine intervention. The Hermitage in the Southern Highlands is home to 14 hectares of vineyard which are picked to produce Marist Brothers wines. Some of the older vines still produce grapes for the wine which is made for the church, and they’re called the Saints Vine. The winery’s production is growing at a pace cellar master Brother Peter says is at times a little too quick – so [...]
